Bulgarian UniHospital become the first digital healthcare treasure from SE Europe integrating IBM technologies

unihospital-cover

IBM recently announced that the new Bulgarian multi-specialty UniHospital, opened in June, is innovating in patient care via a private cloud based electronic health record services delivered to physicians and patients through a fully integrated and digitized IT infrastructure.

unihospital-1Panagyurishte, a town located in a mining area from Pazardzhik Province – Southern Bulgaria, is famous for his gold Thracian treasure, discovered in 1949. Now, the city is famous for UniHospital, the biggest healthcare investment in Bulgaria in the last 25 years. Evaluated at more than EUR 45 million, the hospital project is based on 310-bed facility features 27 clinics and diagnostic centers with more than 700 staff. The digital hospital is hosting the latest technologies in surgery, imaging, laboratory and electronic medical records, including next generation medical multimodal linear accelerators and a robotic digital subtraction angiography system within a hybrid operating room, unique for the region of South East Europe. Eleven separate and fully functional medical systems handle the entire medical process.

IBM has designed and together with other vendors has implemented a solution, which is the first of its kind deployed in Bulgaria. It connects hospital’s medical systems and brings data from disparate applications and equipment together to offer a real-time view of patient’s condition via a web portal. All patient records, MRI scans and other medical applications are hosted onto a single datacenter, significantly speeding up the full cycle – from the right diagnosis to the right treatment.

“IBM solutions working in UniHospital are a real proof point that the first step towards an intelligent and effective healthcare begins with the digitalization of the entire medical process,” says Dr. Lucia Dobreva, Director of UniHospital. “Our hospital hosts world’s top medical and imaging equipment, however its value can be fully harnessed only when the design and the performance of the IT infrastructure match that quality. This is a fact at UniHospital and today, for example, our microbiology laboratory can localize an infectious agent within just five minutes, after which doctors can analyze full patient picture to identify the right treatment in less than six hours –a process that in other facilities may take up to three days.”

unihospital-2Today, UniHospital is the first healthcare project in Bulgaria and in South East Europe which enable simultaneous use of medical imaging during surgery or other invasive manipulations. Its IT infrastructure has the handling capacity for huge amounts of data. A 15 GB PET-CT scan, for example, is being generated in just a couple of minutes and in very short time can be shared across all hospital’s clinics and directly displayed in the surgery room.

“Since the first agreement signed last year, IBM has been delivering a full end-to-end healthcare development roadmap to UniHospital, covering a wide range of healthcare services – from basic hospital operations, imaging and lab services, patient clinical information, to integration of medical systems, data analytics, and discussions about cognitive healthcare,” says Igor Pravica, Country Leader, IBM Bulgaria.

IBM solution enabled new levels of uptime and stability, increased agility, faster and better patient services and greater operational efficiency. In the long run the IT infrastructure can be further developed to help UniHospital cull insight from swelling volumes of patient data and provide it easily to doctors, nurses, clinical laboratories and other healthcare institutions.

IT IS A LONG WAY TO DIGITAL EUROPE

European Commission just published his annual update for Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), a composite index that summarizes relevant indicators on Europe’s digital performance and tracks the evolution of EU member states in digital competitiveness. As main conclusion DESI 2016 stated a certain progress could be observed in connectivity and some public services area, but Europe overall digital transformation is very slow.

DESI index is calculated on five pivotal dimensions: connectivity (broadband infrastructure development), Human Capital (skills needed to use advantages of digital society), Internet Use (online involvement of citizens), Digital Technologies integration (business digitisation and online sales), and Digital Public Services (eGovernment and public services digitisation).

Together to a new Digital Single MarketOettinger Status

Replacing major EU program focused on Digital Agenda, the new Digital Single Market program is becoming the main digital focus of EU Commission, granting full access to digital benefits, for citizens, for business and for government. In EU Commission vision it is time now to fit the EU’s single market to the digital age – unifying 28 national markets in a single one. This should create thousands of new jobs and could contribute €415 billion per year to EU economy.

Three main policy directions are sustaining the Digital Single Market strategy:

EU countries clusters

The overall Europe index progression is scored at 0.52 in 2016, up from 0.50 last year. Most important drivers for this improvement were Connectivity and Integration of Digital Technology dimensions. Considering average EU index countries were grouped in clusters according to their score:

Running ahead: Austria, Estonia, Germany, Malta, the Netherlands and Portugal – countries with score above the EU average and faster growing

Lagging ahead: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Sweden and the United Kingdom – countries with score above the EU average but slower growing:

Catching up: Spain, Croatia, Italy, Latvia, Romania and Slovenia – countries with score below the EU average but faster growing:

Falling behind: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Greece, France, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia – countries with score below the EU average and slower development:

Ranking evolution 2015-2016

What is the Digital Economy and Society Index?

The Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) is an online tool to measure the progress of EU Member States towards a digital economy and society. As such, it brings together a set of relevant indicators on Europe’s current digital policy mix.

DESI

DESI Main Policy Areas

The DESI is composed of five principal policy areas which represent overall more than 30 indicators:

  • Connectivity: how widespread, fast and affordable broadband is,
  • Human Capital/Digital Skills: the digital skills of the population and workforce,
  • Use of Internet: the use of online activities from news to banking or shopping,
  • Integration of Digital Technology: how businesses integrate key digital technologies, such as e-invoices, cloud services, e-commerce, etc. and
  • Digital Public Services: such as e-government and e-health.

To calculate a country’s overall score, each set and subset of indicators were given a specific weighting by European Commission experts. Connectivity and digital skills (‘human capital’), considered as foundations of the digital economy and society, each contribute 25% to the total score (maximum digital performance score is 1). Integration of digital technology accounts for 20%, since the use of ICT by the business sector is one of the most important drivers of growth. Finally, online activities (‘use of Internet’) and digital public services each contribute 15%. The DESI online tool is flexible and allows users to experiment with different weightings for each indicator and see how this impacts overall rankings.

ORACLE FACILITEAZA ADOPTAREA CLOUDULUI IN EUROPA CENTRALA SI DE EST

DESPRE MOBILITATE IN CLOUD CU DOMNUL ZOLI HERCZEG

zoli herczeg”Poate exista mobilitate fără cloud?

DESPRE MOBILITATE IN CLOUD CU DOMNUL THEODOR STANESCU

Doru Stanescu”Poate exista mobilitate fără cloud?

DESPRE MOBILITATE IN CLOUD CU DOMNUL ROBERT KOMARTIN

DESPRE MOBILITATE IN CLOUD CU DOAMNA ANDREEA MARASESCU

CATALOG CLOUD COMPUTING – MOBILE CLOUD

http://ittrends.ro/2015/03/catalog-cloud-computing-romania-2015-editia-a-3-a/

Cititi Catalogul Cloud Computing – editia a 3-a, Mobile Cloud Computing!

Distributia geografica a vizitatorilor cloudmania

  1. Statele Unite  13% din numarul total de vizitatori
  2. Regatul Unit   4%
  3. India                 3.7%
  4. Franta              3. 6%

Ce isi propune cloud☁mania pentru 2015? Exista multe proiecte.

A TRECUT VREMEA SA VORBIM…

Dupa ce la inceputul anului prezentam Catalogul Cloud Computing Romania 2014, ca prim rod al unui proiect ambitios, gandit si elaborat de AGORA Group si cloud☁mania, iata ca, dupa numai sase luni anuntam a doua editie a Catalogului, dedicata solutiilor Infrastructure as a Service. Lansarea oficiala a Catalogului s-a facut cu ocazia conferintei “Convergence, Cloud Computing, XaaS (Everything as a Service)” organizata de Agora Group, joi 26 iunie 2014, la hotelul Marchal Garden din Bucuresti.

Catalog IaaS

CATALOG CLOUD COMPUTING ROMANIA 2014

E timpul sa vorbim despre cloud

Agoraalbastru banner

CIO’s TOP 10 CLOUD PREDICTIONS FOR 2014

Last December CIO published “10 Cloud Computing Predictions for 2014”, a very interesting estimation about cloud computing market and technologies development in 2014, with a special focus on application development made by Mr Bernard Golden, senior director Cloud Computing Enterprise Solutions group at Dell. 2014 predictions

Considering the high acceleration development of cloud computing could become a rule, not an exception, 2014 will be in the author vision “an interesting and disruptive year for vendors, service providers and IT organizations”.

Cloud evolution is ready to become history. Beginning as a controversial and unproven concept five years ago, cloud computing has all the chances to become a “default IT platform in the near future” and today’s arguments against cloud are limited.

Interesting is author view about the real security concerning sources: “The alarm raised about cloud security was just air cover for IT personnel who didn’t want to change their established practices. Furthermore, the concern about security would disappear not because cloud providers suddenly “proved” they were secure enough but because recalcitrant IT personnel read the writing on the wall and realized they had to embrace cloud computing or face the prospect of a far larger change — unemployment”. And many peoples are thinking the same…

The main cloud computing trends in 2014 are viewed from double perspective: one from end-users side, and second from vendor/cloud provider. In respect for the author opinions, I will show in this post only the predictions titles, recommending to you to read the original article in CIO.com

Here are top 5 (end-users) + 5 (vendors/ providers) predictions according Mr. Bernard Golden vision:

  1. More Businesses Will Become Software Companies
  2. Application Developers Will Become More Important
  3. Application Workload Placement Decisions Will Continue to Shift to End Users
  4. Private Cloud Will Have Its Moment of Truth
  5. Cloud Brokerage Will Come Into Focus
  6. AWS Will Continues Its Torrid Pace of Innovation
  7. Google, Microsoft Will Get Serious About the Cloud
  8. The Importance of Ecosystem Will Become Clear
  9. VMware Will Realizes vCHS Is Critical to Its Future
  10. A Pricing Bloodbath Is Coming to the Public Cloud

Concluding, Mr Golden is considering: “what has happened in the industry to this point has been the prologue for the main cloud computing story. Next year represents the beginning of the main story. In 2014, we’ll see cloud computing become the dominant platform for IT from now on.”

How clear these predictions are? What are the chances to become reality? We will be able to analyse this in December 2014 only…

GARTNER’s DEFINITIONS ABOUT CLOUD (4)

Let’s continue our “Cloud Definition” Journey to better term of cloud-computing, making a criss-cross between different definitions of cloud. It’s easy to see the term “cloud computing” is being loosely applied and defined differently in the market by users and vendors. The better understandings of cloud perspectives and properly setting of clear expectations are key factors in cloud adoption and migration results. This time I’m posting the Gartner definitions and specific perspectives about cloud.

cloud definitionsAccording Gartner high experience in the cloud research, the term “cloud computing” is being loosely applied and defined differently, and it’s creating a lot of confusion in the market. In September 2008, Gartner defines cloud computing “as a style of computing in which massively scalable IT-related capabilities are provided “as a service” using Internet technologies to multiple external customers”. Few months later, Gartner defines cloud computing “as a style of computing in which scalable and elastic IT-enabled capabilities are delivered as a service to external customers using Internet technologies”. Where is the difference? Gartner has removed “massively scalable” and replaced it with “scalable and elastic” as an indicator that the important characteristic of scale is the ability to scale up and down, not just to massive size.

However, there have been different perceptions about what is included in cloud computing. “The term cloud computing has come to mean two very different things: a broader use that focuses on ‘cloud,’ and a more-focused use on system infrastructure and virtualization,” said David Mitchell Smith, VP and Gartner Fellow. “Mixing the discussion of ‘cloud-enabling technologies’ with ‘cloud computing services’ creates confusion.”

One of the major views of cloud computing in the market is assuming the cloud image viewed from the Internet/Web/software as a service (SaaS) perspective. The focus is more on the cloud than on the computing with the bold accent on the access to services from anywhere. This cloud is a global-class phenomenon and a high-level concept that can refer to a range of services extending from system infrastructure (for example, compute services and storage services) through applications (for example, CRM) and business processes (for example, payroll services). Gartner’s definition is along these lines, with the off-premises nature of cloud services being the point of reference, and applicability to intra-enterprise use as a secondary effect.

The second popular interpretation is built on technologies basement, where virtualization and automation are the main leitmotif, and all spot lights are focused on the computing. This perspective is an extension of traditional data center approaches and can be applied to entirely internal enterprise systems with no use of external off-premises capabilities provided by a third party.

“Although these perspectives are different, there is a connection between them. Any provider of cloud computing services must have an environment that includes an infrastructure to support their delivery. Virtualization often is used to implement this underlying infrastructure to support delivery of the cloud computing services,” said David Mitchell Smith. “Cloud system infrastructure services are a subset of cloud computing, but not the entire picture.”

Gartner recommends that users clearly separate the consideration of cloud computing and cloud computing services from the use of cloud computing-related concepts and technologies for the creation of internal systems. Both perspectives (services and technologies) are valuable and should be pursued.

5 Cloud Attributes according Gartner

Gartner identified the five attributes of cloud computing. By using these attributes, it is possible to see how strongly a cloud solution (or service) adheres to the cloud computing model.

“When approaching cloud computing, providers of cloud services and potential consumers of cloud services must examine the attributes of cloud computing to determine whether their services will deliver the expected outcomes,” said Daryl Plummer, managing VP and Chief Gartner Fellow. “If a service is not scalable and elastic, then it may not be shareable enough. If it is not metered by use, then it may not allow for flexible pricing. Support for more of the attributes opens the door to a great value proposition to the consumer, and greater flexibility and potential cost reduction for the provider.

“We recognize that services may adhere to some attributes more effectively than others,” also said David Mitchell Smith. “The degree to which the service exhibits all these characteristics indicates how much it adheres to the cloud computing model. One must examine a combination of these attributes to evaluate cloud services. Focusing on one attribute in isolation is not recommended.”

The five attributes of cloud computing according Gartner are:

1.    Service-Based: Consumer concerns are abstracted from provider concerns through service interfaces that are well-defined. The interfaces hide the implementation details and enable a completely automated response by the provider of the service to the consumer of the service. The service could be considered “ready to use” or “off the shelf” because the service is designed to serve the specific needs of a set of consumers, and the technologies are tailored to that need rather than the service being tailored to how the technology works.

2.    Scalable and Elastic: The service can scale capacity up or down as the consumer demands at the speed of full automation. Elasticity is a trait of shared pools of resources. Scalability is a feature of the underlying infrastructure and software platforms. Elasticity is associated with not only scale but also an economic model that enables scaling in both directions in an automated fashion. This means that services scale on demand to add or remove resources as needed.

3.    Shared: Services share a pool of resources to build economies of scale. IT resources are used with maximum efficiency. The underlying infrastructure, software or platforms are shared among the consumers of the service (usually unknown to the consumers). This enables unused resources to serve multiple needs for multiple consumers, all working at the same time.

4.    Metered by Use: Services are tracked with usage metrics to enable multiple payment models. The service provider has a usage accounting model for measuring the use of the services, which could then be used to create different pricing plans and models. These may include pay-as-you go plans, subscriptions, fixed plans and even free plans. The implied payment plans will be based on usage, not on the cost of the equipment. These plans are based on the amount of the service used by the consumers, which may be in terms of hours, data transfers or other use-based attributes delivered.

5.    Uses Internet Technologies: The service is delivered using Internet identifiers, formats and protocols, such as URLs, HTTP, IP and representational state transfer Web-oriented architecture. Many examples of Web technology exist as the foundation for Internet-based services. Google’s Gmail, Amazon.com’s book buying, eBay’s auctions and Lolcats’ picture sharing all exhibit the use of Internet and Web technologies and protocols.

GARTNER VP DARYL PLUMMER ABOUT CLOUD – cloud☁mania, 14 October 2013

GARTNER VP DARYL PLUMMER ABOUT CLOUD

VIP About Cloud

Daryl Plummer, Managing VP & Gartner Fellow, is unanimity recognised as a master in the absolute concise and accurate observation.

DarylPlummer-2Here are very interesting personal considerations related to six key points about cloud technologies and cloud adoption, delivered as a formidable ‘state of the cloud’ report during the last traditional Gartner Symposium.

1. “If you have to know how it works, it’s not cloud” – one of the most concise and comprehensive definition of cloud… If a customer could know anything about how is working services in the cloud, then it’s not a real cloud.

2. “There is no such thing as a cloud – there are only cloud services” – any customer should know cloud is not universal panacea, and everything could be in his benefit is related to services on the cloud.

3. “Don’t put your eggs in one cloud basket because that’s the road to disaster” – paraphrase after an old popular proverb, this statement is a recommendation to not migrate all data and all applications on the same platform provided by the same vendor.

4. “Private cloud is a great first step to the public cloud, but not a great last step” – from the practice is a reality: many companies is starting cloud adoption with a private cloud implementation, what is the result of virtualization progress, but this should be not the last movement. Any part of infrastructure that could be migrated in public cloud will grow the cost reduction benefits.

5. “IaaS is easy, but not the best value” – starting from any architecture basement, implementation of infrastructure-as-a-services is the most elementary step in private cloud adoption, but this should be not the last step. Other cloud formula like platform-as-a-service and software-as-a-service could offer more benefits “We’re going to be spending more on PaaS and SaaS,” Plummer says.

6. “Cloud computing will be just computing by 2018” – this is becoming more and more clear. According Plummer predictions 2016 will be “the defining year of the cloud.” Just like personal clouds became popular in 2013, the convergence between the main trends like the Internet of Everything, 3D printing, and smart machines will be the cloud engine generators in 2016. “Cloud is the place where big data really happens,” says Plummer. In the same way we already forget to use consecrated terms like e-business, complete assimilated now with classic business concept, the same will be the future of cloud computing, which by 2018 will be just like old computing notion.
