It is already a four year tradition for Gartner Symposium/ IT Expo event, to announce predictions for next year strategic technology trends. From 3D Printing, to Pervasive Analytics, from Everything Computing to Smart Machines, this year the only surprise is all announced trends are not emerging from a SF novel… So, no surprise this year… Like in 2014 predictions all technologies are more or less related to Cloud concept, the only difference for 2015 being all are looking to us something familiar…

And this is quite normal thinking we are from time to time on different levels on the same Digital Revolution spiral, with different interferences between major technology innovations. More then, in Gartner’s vision a strategic technology trend is that one “with potential for significant impact on the organization in the next three years.” The „Deja-vu” sentiment is highlighted by the fact in a simple review of actual Top 10 major trends, 5 trends are the same like in last year predictions and other 5 are already commented trends but analyzed and presented from other perspective.

Let’s take a look to Gartner’s Top 10 Strategic trends for 2015, starting with already know definitions:Gartner Top Strategies

Internet of Things (IoT)here is a first trend coming from last year predictions, being in fact more than familiar in the last 4 years. If you have time and curiosity you can read a more in depth analyze made by Mr. Michael Kassner, who in the article Gartner’s top 10 technology trends for 2015: All about the cloud” is making a parallel analyze between four editions of predictions, starting from 2012… For 2015 Gartner is predicting the combination of data streams and services resulted from digitizing everything will conglomerate four basic usage models — Manage, Monetize, Operate and Extend, and will be the Enterprises target from all industries to leverage these models.

3D Printing – is nothing new in technology concept. What is evolving is major downing of the costs in parallel with next steps in market evolution. Any new entry of a traditional printing player like HP, could radically influence predictable 3D printing market. New industrial, biomedical and consumer applications will continue to be the main drivers in 3D printing major trends related to improved designs, digital prototyping and computer assisted manufacturing.

Smart Machines – analytics focused on context understanding and advanced algorithms will perform a new smart machines generation able to understand their environment, to learn for themselves, and to act autonomously. Actual self-drive prototype vehicles, most technologized robots or virtual personal assistants will evolve rapidly to a new generation of smart machine, probably „the most disruptive in the history of IT”, according Gartner.

Cloud/Client Architecture – other trend coming from last year predictions as convergence between cloud and mobile computing, will continue to growth the request for centrally coordinated applications that can be delivered to any device. The next target will be better synchronization of content and better portability of application across multiple devices.

Web-Scale IT – other concept coming from 2014 predictions as a Web technologies evolution to commercial hardware platforms which have capabilities to embrace the new cloud-optimized models and software-defined approaches. According Gartner, for many organizations a first step toward the Web-scale stage should be DevOps — bringing development and operations together in a coordinated way to drive rapid and incremental development of applications and services.

Computing Everywhere – this a new definition of previous concepts based on fast-forward evolution of smart-phones technologies. The new Gartner trend is based on the increased expectation to serve mobile users needs in various contexts and environments. In other words, more important are the services than appliances and what is already on the tablets and smart-phones display today will be available on any kind of workplace or public area displays in the next.

Advanced, Pervasive, Invisible Analytics – IoT and fastest development of embedded chip equipment will generate more and more volumes of data which should be processed shared and stored in big data structured and unstructured pools. Gartner says analytics will become deeply, but invisibly embedded everywhere”, but the focus will be to shift the thinking from Big Data to Big Questions and Big Answers.

Context-Rich Systems – intelligence embedded in anything could support a microchip combined with pervasive analytics will drive the development of alert eco-systems new generation based on context-aware security.

Software-Defined Infrastructure and Applications – is other old concept presented in a new definition imposed by agile programming of everything from applications to basic infrastructure.  Software-defined networking, storage, data centers and security are maturing, but Cloud services are software-configurable through API calls.  Quick changing demands of digital business and constant need for increasing systems scalability are moving computing models from static to dynamic models, generating the need for new rules, new models, and new codes.

Risk-Based Security and Self-Protection – here is a trend which is clear evolving from hot need to eliminate the security nightmares generated by mobile and Cloud computing platforms. Despite the radical warranties offered in theory, we have not providers able to assume 100% invulnerability. In today’s dangerous digital world, all roads will lead to new models of building security directly into self-aware and self-protecting applications.

Concluding, we have to mention the statement of David Cearley, vice president Gartner, which appreciated the big themes covered by Top trends for 2015 are „the merging of the real and virtual worlds, the advent of intelligence everywhere, and the technology impact of the digital business shift.” Finally we have also to assume the next year strategic trends will not reach the same investment and adoption popularity, being function of organizations level of understanding when to deliberate and how to integrate this strategic trends in their business strategy for the next future.
