Time is passing, clouds are going and coming again, sun is shining…  This is a celebrating article resuming what’s happened in 2 years of cloud☁mania activity.

Starting as a Cloud dedicated online magazine mapped on a WordPress blog format cloud☁mania is becoming more than a simple blog… After 2 years, cloud☁mania is acting like a social-technology platform. If in 2013 more than 70% of cloud☁mania’s visitors were Romanians, in 2014 the segment of international visitors was majority with +57%, and during this beginning of the year this segment growth to +65%.

2 ANI DE CLOUD☁MANIA

Logo Patrat Radu micCe mai trece timpul… Fix acum 2 ani “Avalansa BigData” marca inceputul postarilor pe cloudmania. Cum partea de continut editorial nu imi era chiar straina, primele postari au reprezentat replici ale unor articole publicate in reviste de specialitate sau online. Cu putina rabdare, m-am acomodat cu instrumentele  Wordpress si a inceput sa prinda contur o ambitie  de a initia ceva deosebit in social media, un fel de revista online imbracata in haine de blog si cu posibilitati nelimitate de adresare si comunicare.

Catalog_Cloud_Computing_2014-211x300Cloudul nu a fost nici el o tema intamplatoare. De la bun inceput totul a fost gandit pentru cloud pentru ca exista o mare cantitate de informatii pe care le receptionam zilnic si care meritau partajate, puse in valoare. Si pentru ca blogul cloud☁mania nu era un scop in sine, ci o platforma pentru dezvoltarea unor multiple activitati legate de popularizarea solutiilor cloud, toate au inceput sa se lege de la sine, pe masura ce ma angrenam si angrenam la randul meu in comunitatea cloud: webinarii, prezentari, parteneriate, consultanta, Cataloage, jurizare de concursuri, workshopuri internationale, interviuri in exclusivitate, calendare, invitatii la evenimente, educatie, specializari, certificari, standarde si mai ales – ce imi face intotdeauna o mare placere – popularizarea povestilor de succes ale unor implementari de cloud.

Dar mai usor cu sentimentalismele si  sa lasam cifrele sa vorbeasca…

Distributia geografica a vizitatorilor cloudmania

Aici s-a intamplat un fenomen interesant. Daca in 2013 aproape 70% dintre vizitatorii cloud☁mania erau din Romania, in 2014 ponderea vizitatorilor internationali a devenit de 57%, iar in acest inceput de an 2015 a depasit 65% din numarul total de vizitari. Admitand ca o parte dintre vizitatori sunt romani, dar vin de pe servere de corporatie, putem sa mai aplicam un coeficient de corectie la aceste rapoarte, dar asta nu afecteaza caracteristica de extindere internationala a inter-relatiilor generate de platforma cloud☁mania care a primit vizite din circa 113 de tari…

Ce isi propune cloud☁mania pentru 2015? Exista multe proiecte. Primul  va fi lansat in curad sub forma celei de-a treia editii a Catalogului Cloud Computing, dedicat unei teme de stricta actualitate. Apoi o largire a colaboraii internationale cu multe contributii editoriale in exclusivitate si subiecte de la frontierele tehnologice ale cloudului.

Dar cea mai importanta activitate va fi in continuare aceea de diversificare a activitatilor menite sa creeze acea emulatie pentru cloud, atat de utila in depasirea unor rifturi naturale, dar de cele mai multe ori create chiar de noi, si care ne-a lipit eticheta de “tara etern emergent”…  Contrar scepticismului general din comunitatile IT, in special in perioada aceasta cu ample miscari seismice cantonate in subteranele politicului, sunt un adept al miscarii “se poate” … si chiar cred ca se poate face mai mult si ca avem aceleasi sanse cu unii dintre vecinii nostri, mai putin inventivi, dar putin mai harnici…

La Multi Ani de Cloud!

 

 

ADOBE – COMPANIA CARE A AVUT CURAJUL SA SE REINVENTEZE PRIN CLOUD

Interesanta analiza publicata de Forbes, unde se discuta despre principalele probleme pe care le are de rezolvat o companie care incearca sa se reinventeze pe baza tehnologiilor disruptive, care in mod paradoxal, produc efecte contrare celor scontate. De ce mi se pare interesant acest subiect? Pentru ca “eroul” principal al articolului este compania Adobe si pentru ca tehnologia disruptiva care a determinat remodelarea intregului proces de business este… ati ghicit, cloud computing…

Creative-Cloud.Marketing-CloudPentru cei mai putin familiarizati cu evolutia Adobe, iata despre ce este vorba: in noiembrie 2011 Adobe Systems   isi anunta intentia de a diminua drastic dependenta de aplicatiile cu licentiere perpetua, optand pentru migrarea treptata a produselor si larga acceptare a subscriptiei cloud. Alte intentii la fel de socante pentru perioada respectiva se refereau la:

  • Concentrarea pe doua initiative mai importante: digital media si digital marketing
  • Limitarea investitiilor in domeniul hardware si al echipamentelor
  • Cresterea interesului pentru instrumentele de dezvoltare HTML5.

In analiza Gartner de la vremea respectiva scopul acestor schimbari nu avea un precedent in industria IT. Prin reconstruirea ofertei de produse in jurul suitei Creative Cloud si a noilor modalitati de licentiere bazate pe subscriptii, Adobe si-a remodelat practic intregul model de business. Prin focalizarea pe digital media si digital marketing, Adobe a renuntat la unele ambitii mai vechi legate de familia de produse LiveCycle si brandul Adobe Digital Enterprise Platform.

Riscurile legate de aceasta migrare curajoasa atarnau mult mai greu in raport cu castigurile posibile. In primul rand renuntarea la o platforma creativa de nivel enterprise putea compromite increderea segmentului de clienti interesati de aceste solutii. Experimentele realizate cu subscriptiile pentru Creative Suite 5.5 au convins managementul Adobe ca beneficiile migrarii spre servicii bazate pe cloud ar putea fi reale si ca principalele directii de dezvoltare trebuie sa vizeze platforma Creative Cloud si marketingul digital, precum sinergiile emanate in jurul acestora.

Conform autorului articolului “5 Ways That Adobe Systems Disrupted Itself” din Forbes, cele 5 momente critice esentiale depasite de Adobe in amplul proces de transformare din perioada 2011-2014 se refera la:

  1. Rezolvarea problemei care trebuie, la momentul potrivit – managementul oricarei companii care se reinventeaza trebuie in primul rand sa se concentree pe rezolvarea celei mai importante probleme a momentului. Problema generatoare de schimbare la Adobe a fost legata de costurile ridicate pentru identificarea unor noi clienti, odata cu fiecare lansare a unei noi versiuni software… Daca in perioada crizei din 2007-2008, doar 5% din cifra de afaceri repezenta venituri recurente, valoarea acestui indicator a ajuns la peste 60% in 2014, potrivit declaratiilor lui Mark Garrett, CFO Adobe.
  2. Regandirea intregului flux de business – orice efort de regandire a unui process pe baza unei decizii capitale trebuie sa inceapa de la o coala alba e hartie, pe care o echipa manageriala vizionara sa traseze noul model. Adobe a parcurs aceasta etapa in momentul in care s-a decis sa isi remodeleze procesul de business prin adoptarea modelului de licentiere cloud bazat pe subscriptie. Aici nu a fost vorba de o dilema de tipul: “Oare sa cumpar aceasta masina sau sa o inchiriez?” In cazul Adobe nu exista decat o directive si pe aceea trebuia mers.
  3. Transformarea operatilor de business – orice schimbare de strategie reclama si o readaptare a schemei operatiilor de business. Adobe a trebuit sa isi construiasca un sistem back office extrem de solid, care sa asigure clientilor accesul continuu si constant la noile servicii oferite, dar si un nou sistem de administrare a acestor operatii. Un model de business bazat pe subscriptie necesita o disponibilitate de tip 24/7. De la simpla inscriptionare a CD-urilor cu licente la noua masinarie din back-office a fost un pas urias pentru Adobe, care a impus schimbarea de sisteme, procese ingineresti si indicatori financiari cheie.
  4. Fara cale de intoarcere – O etapa esentiala in adoptarea unui nou model de business este gasirea modalitatii optime de explicare a schimbarii atat pentru angajati, cat si pentru clienti. De cele mai multe ori explicatia poate fi de genul: “Nu avem alta cale de mijloc. Asa trebuie sa procedam…” De cele mai multe ori nu exista o cale de intoarcere… Adobe si-a educat clientii in privinta schimbarii, oferindu-le noi servicii, pe masura ce vechile produse erau retrase. Dar nu clientii au fost problema. In multe tari, vechile deprinderi ale canalelor de distributie au fost o frana si s-a dovedit ca desi clientii erau pregatiti pentru cloud, nu toti partenerii certificati au putut face fata tranzitiei de la “box moving” la vanzarea de servicii Cloud. Nici din perspectiva angajatilor se pare ca nu a fost un process simplu. Compania le-a explicat clar care este noul focus si care sunt noile directii. Cei rezistenti la schimbare nu au avut prea multe alternative…
  5. Transparenta – Pentru ca revolutia schimbarilor sa isi produca efectul scontat, adica o crestere vizibila a valorii actiunilor la burse, o companie care se reinventeaza trebuie sa convinga si mecanismele financiare, printr-o transparenta totala a efectelor care trebuie sa se produca dupa fiecare etapa. Potrivit Forbes, se pare ca Adobe a reusit acest lucru estimand valoarea indusa de fiecare pas parcurs pe scara transformarilor. “A fost destul de complicat pentru cei de pe Wall Street sa inteleaga ca succesul noului model depindea de rapidicatea de cadere a celui vechi,” aprecia Garrett, caci, “cu cat indicatorii P&L se prabusesc mai mult, cu atat este mai bine pentru investitori, care prin noul model de subscriptii pot beneficia de produse pe un termen mult mai lung.” Adobe si-a setat pentru Wall Street noi targeturi ale indicatorilor de performanta pe care le-a si depasit…

Conceptul “Disruptive Technology” a fost lansat de profesorul Clayton Christensen de la Harvard Business School, care in cartea sa “The Innovator’s Dilemma”, publicata in 1997 si devenita best-seller, descria tehnologiile disruptive ca acele tehnologii de granita care in mod cu totul inexplicabil le inlocuiesc pe cele traditionale. La polul opus se situeazaSustaining technologies”, care sunt adoptate in mod natural, ca urmare a evolutiei tehnologice, chiar daca adoptia la scara larga se produce in etape successive. Spre deosebire de acestea, conform autorului, “tehnologiile disruptive se caracterizeaza printr-o totala lipsa de rafinament, au deseori probleme de performanta, nu dovedesc o reala aplicabilitate si se adreseaza unui public restrans”.

FOG COMPUTING – A NATURAL BRIDGE BETWEEN CLOUD AND IoT

“A new trend could be observed in joint relation with cloud” – it was the beginning of my December 2013 article, discussing about a new concept which behind exotic name founded the premises for distributed cloud models. In February 2015 we could describe Fog Computing as essential bridge between the infinite power of the Cloud and an almost infinite number of intelligent edge-points, conventionally conglomerated in IoT concept.

SF FogWhat’s happened with Fog Computing in this very short period? Cloud computing confirmed most of tech and market predictions, being involved in all major technology trends, from Big Data and Analytics, to Mobility, M2M, and Internet of Everything… In parallel with this, IoT concept gains an explosive development, having as main engine exponential increasing of data volumes provided by more and more population and large variety of intelligent devices.

Admitting some simplifying arguments, we could assimilate the Fog Computing transition from the primary role of “Cloud particularity” to the maturity stage governed by data gravity model, where applications are going to the data.  A large contribution in this evolution should be recognized to Cisco, IBM and other technology innovators which appreciated the strategic role of distributed data and focused on Fog Computing applicative research and strategic development platform. 

The needs for a more distributed model are coming from most obvious physical dispersion of data, coming in exponential increasing volume from more and more devices. Even processing and storage heaven offered by Cloud could not support huge amounts of data and could not deliver the large information content to users dispersed in geographical areas.

According various sources, Ginny Nichols from Cisco used for the first time the name “Fog Computing”, as a metaphoric association of the ground levels of cloud with concentrated computing processes from the edges of the networks. After that, the term “Fog Computing” has been adopted by Cisco Systems as a new paradigm to sustain wireless data transfer to distributed devices in the “Internet of Things.” Many other distributed computing and storage startups providers also embraced the new concept as extension of previous distributed computing models – like content delivery networks, but assuming delivery of more complex services using cloud technologies.

In January 2014 Cisco reveled his own fog computing vision, designed on the idea of bringing cloud computing capabilities to the edge of the network, much closer to the growing number of user devices that are consuming cloud services and generating the increasingly massive amount of data. Short time after, Cisco unveiled the company’s IOx platform, designed to bring distributed computing to the network edge.

According Cisco, Fog Computing extends the cloud computing paradigm to the edge of the network. While fog and cloud use the same computing, storage or network resources, and share many of the same mechanisms and attributes, like multi-tenancy and virtualization.

Now we could speak about a Fog Computing ecosystem based on Fog conceptually extension of Cloud computing – covering in a denser way wider geographic locations, and concentrations of Fog devices – much more heterogeneous in nature, ranging from end-user terminals, access points, to networks edge routers and switches. Provided data should be processed locally in smart devices rather than being sent for processing in the cloud. Fog computing is one approach to dealing with the demands of the ever-increasing number small connected devices, sometimes referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT).

In the IoT scenario, a thing is any natural or man-made object that can be assigned an IP address and provided with the ability to transfer data over a network. Some such things can create a lot of data. Mr. Michael Enescu  offered as example a jet engine, which can create 20 terabytes of engine performance data in one hour. Sending all data to the cloud and receiving the data back involve increasing demand for bandwidth, considerable amount of time, and induced latency. In a Fog Computing environment, a big part of local data processing would take place in a router, rather than having to be transmitted.

Resuming, the main characteristics of the Fog are:

  1. Low latency and location awareness;
  2. Wide-spread geographical distribution;
  3. Wide area and real time Mobility access;
  4. Increasing number and diversity of nodes;
  5. Essential access to wireless;
  6. Strong presence of streaming and real time applications,
  7. Heterogeneity of devices and data sources.

The most illustrative example of Fog computing models in real success stories for IoT are related to projects for Connected Vehicles, Smart Grid, Smart Cities, Education, Ecology, or Health Care.  As described in the Cisco research group article  the Connected Vehicle deployment could displays various connectivity scenarios: cars to cars, cars to access points (Wi-Fi, 3G, LTE, roadside units [RSUs], smart traffic lights), and access points to access points. The Fog has a number of attributes that make it the ideal platform to deliver a rich menu of SCV services in infotainment, safety, traffic support, and analytics: geo-distribution (throughout cities and along roads), mobility and location awareness, low latency, heterogeneity, and support for real-time interactions.

A smart traffic light system is based on smart traffic light nodes, which interacts locally with a number of terrain sensors which are detecting the presence of pedestrians and bikers, and measures the distance and speed of approaching vehicles. It also interacts with neighboring lights to coordinate the green traffic wave. Based on this information the smart light sends warning signals to approaching vehicles, and even modifies its own cycle to prevent accidents.

Which is the future of Fog Computing? According IBM, as sensors move into more things and data grows at an enormous rate, a new approach to hosting the applications will be needed. Fog computing, which could inventively utilize existing devices, could be the right approach to hosting an important new set of applications.

Could be a paradox, but the movement process to the edge will not decrease the importance of the core. On the contrary, it means that the data center needs to be a stronger nucleus for expanding computing architecture. One argument sustained by Information Week is the server sales market was not affected by the Cloud expansion, Hybrid computing models, Big Data and IoT have contributed to server market development as direct consequence of data volume and data processing increasing request.

Every day more and more devices are connected to the Internet. Until 2020 IoT will bring more than 31 Billion of connected terminals – according Intel,  or 50 Billion of smart devices in a more optimistic prediction from Cisco. But if expansion of intelligent devices could be more or less predicted on short or middle time, the extraordinary increasing of data volume is hard to be estimated.

Until smarter analytics and research investigation tools will be invented, let’s think to these figures: IoT traffic will grow with 82% until 2017 and more than 90% of actual data was created in the last two years…

Agora Grup va organiza joi 12 Februarie la hotelul Marshal Garden din Bucuresti o conferinta dedicata solutiilor pentru centrele de date si managementul infrastructurii, unde cateva dintre companiile implicate in acest domeniu vor prezenta elementele fundamentale ce compun o posibila strategie de planificare, achizitie sau administrare a unor astfel de solutii.

conferintele AgoraViitorul este in cloud, in mobilitate si in social. Tsunamiul Internet of Things abia apare la orizont. În lume există deja 1,9 miliarde de smartphone-uri, pe care se utilizează în medie 26 de aplicații (Apps)/telefon și se execută 20 de tranzacții zilnice cu un centru de date/aplicație. Se ajunge astfel la un volum de 1 trilion de tranzacții/zi cu centrele de date.

În 2020 pe glob vor exista 50 de miliarde de dispozitive, care vor produce 35 zettabytes de informație. Centrele de Date vor constitui domeniul în care investițiile vor continua într-un ritm din ce în ce mai accelerat.
