First Hybrid Cloud Catalogue in Romania

The 6th edition of Cloud Computing Catalogue Romania dedicated to Hybrid Cloud solutions is here!

”It is not the strongest species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one most adaptable to change.” Charles Darwin

Hybrid Cloud models are more and more popular because they offer compromise solutions to any organisation that knows what they want and what they can bet, and they do not dream in teleporting on a digital planet. Because, if we want or not, we are in the era where the universal business language is becoming digital, and the disruptive technologies at the forefront of Cloud solutions tend to take on any development strategy. Those who still hesitate to make a radical move towards public cloud migration can find in the hybrid cloud model architectures the best fit between the internal control and classical benefits of public environments.

From our first Cloud Computing Catalogue in January 2014, the Hybrid Cloud implementations become more and more popular. With a hybrid platform, any company could choose on-premises technologies, private Cloud infrastructure managed or not, and Cloud public services from one or more providers, to support increased need for processing anytime, anywhere. According to a The Economist Intelligence Unit study, the Hybrid Cloud market will grow in the next 3-4 years with 22 percent average rate, and almost 3 from 4 IT managers are already in the process to adopt the Hybrid Cloud model.

How do we think the Hybrid Cloud Catalogue editorial structure? First of all, we have a Hybrid Cloud comprehensive guide mapped on 25 essential questions like:

  • What id the Hybrid Cloud? (HC)
  • Which are the fundaments of an HC model?
  • Private, public, or hybrid: What is better for us?
  • Transition stage of the end of the line?
  • Frontend or backend?
  • How could we develop applications in hybrid environments?
  • How can we choose the best Cloud environment?
  • What are market figures saying?
  • Why is so important the HC model?
  • Why is HC more and more popular?
  • What is Cloud Economic Efficiency?
  • Why is HC a business strategic tool?
  • Which are the financial advantages offered by hybrid systems?
  • Which are the marketing advantages offered by HC?
  • How can we avoid the HC miss-concepts?
  • There is a transformation miraculous receipt using HC?
  • What should we understand from a good management of HC system?
  • Public or private? Where should we begin in an HC system implementation?
  • How can we match the private-public puzzle?
  • How can we choose the best provider for hybrid services?
  • Which are the HC system associated risks?
  • What will nobody tell us about the HC adoption?
  • How important are becoming data centres for HC systems?
  • What is a backup in an HC model?
  • How can we choose a backup provider for an HC model?

More that, the Catalogue has a special section where 8 specialists, cloud experts, pioneers and managers offered us their personal statements about Hybrid Cloud. We have to thank for their valuable contribution to Bernd BECKER – Entrepreneur and Cloud Computing Expert Scout2Cloud Consulting, co-founder and former President EuroCloud Europe, Ron KEREN – IBM Country Leader Romania & Republic of Moldova, Ian MOYSE – #1Global Social Cloud Influencer & Cloud Industry Commentator , Florin ILIA – President and General Manager SIVECO Romania, Nicoleta MACOVEI – Executive Director Asseco SEE Europe, Gabriel MARIN – Chief Executive Officer OMNILOGIC, Mihnea MIHĂILESCU – General Manager Ymens, and Razvan STOICA – Chief Executive Officer GTS Telecom.

Finally, to offer a better image and a more accurate perspective on the local market hybrid solutions potential, we have made data centres analyse with a focus on the main services categories there are provided in the whole country: dedicated servers, colocation, virtual servers, Cloud infrastructures, platform hosting, and application hosting services.

We have also to thank companies which understood the value of this project, offering us information about their current hybrid services offers: BIT Software, Datanet Systems, Dell-EMC, GTS Telecom, IDC Romania, NXDATA, PAC, Palo Alto Networks, and SIVECO Romania.

According to cloud☁mania’s analysis, Hybrid Cloud adoption key drivers in Romania are most related to:

  • The Impact of Cloud Computing on the IT Industry
  • Penetration of Broadband and the Internet
  • Large acceptance of Outsourcing Delivery Model
  • Level of Virtualization Adoption
  • Licensing Policy of ISVs

We hope all these drivers together with the largest adoption of hybrid models starting from one existing Cloud or on-premises implementation will conduct to the fast acceleration of local market development in a period when the Hybrid is the better way for all.

Like other five editions of the Cloud Computing Romania Catalogue, this editorial project is the result of the friendly collaboration between Agora Group – the most important IT & business publishing & events group on the Romanian market today, and cloudmania – one of the most appreciated independent knowledge platform for Cloud and business transformation in Central East Europe.

iCU’17 – One Belt One Road for Telco Digital Transformation

Bucharest hosted between 11th and 12th of April a pioneering event in East Europe, part of an international network of events for key players in telecommunication. The “iCU’17 – One Belt One Road” in Bucharest was the first from a similar series of events which will be hosted by Hong Kong (20-21 June), Frankfurt (5-6 September), and Amsterdam (3-4 October). EuroCloud Romania was part of the event partners, hosting the panel discussion dedicated to the Cloud.

Established in June 2016 in Berlin, iCU Events organise international networking events for key players in telecommunications, including telecoms, datacenters, mobile tech, IoT and digital marketing companies. The Bucharest iCU’17 event main purpose was to offer a neutral networking bridge between East and West, for all telecom operators, wholesale carriers and service providers which buy or sell voice, data, delegate SMS, cloud, peering, data centre, content and other services. More than 300 managers and specialists from 30 countries participated in this event, having as main partners NxtVn (as iCU events global partner), Telekom Romania Wholesale, Telekom Austria Group Wholesale, Turk Telecom, Azertelecom, Microsoft, NLix, NXDATA, EuroCloud Romania, ANISP, ANIS, eco, and AFOR.

The panel discussion proposed by iCU for Bucharest event covered a large spectrum of subject reflecting the large transformation process covering the telecom industry, from the centric role of the customer in banking industry, to the “New silk road from China to Germany”, or “Evolution of fiber optic  cables and networks in Romania” and the new partnership between wholesale and enterprise for changing the business needs. The second-day agenda was opened by the Cloud role in digital transformation, followed by a very interesting panel dedicated to the data centers transformation under the impact of evolving IT architectures, and content, digital media & Cloud providers development. Also interesting was the IoT dedicated panel, where the discussions covered how to build an IoT environment for a smart city project.

A special look to “Cloud – a driver of digital transformation” panel moderated by Elena Zvarici – President EuroCloud Romania, and having as guest representants Adrian Popa – Hosting Data Center Product Manager at Telekom Romania, Daniel Rusen – Cloud & Enterprise Lead at Microsoft Romania, Elena Cartsoiu – COO at 4PSA, and Dan Nechita – former State Counselor in Romanian Government. Cloud Computing is becoming more than a driver for the digital transformation process. Cloud is the main driver in this revolutionary phenomenon.  And there are a lot of arguments able to sustain this.

Focusing on the Cloud transformation role for a country like Romania, all panel participants agreed this transformation process is not easy but should be started with an equal focus on horizontal economic efficiency perspectives, but from big companies, SMB and government also. Microsoft was the first large software provider to launch Cloud solutions in Romania, and Telekom was naturally the first major operator to offer special packages for different business categories, whose diversification package was dictated by the growing demand for cloud services. “We have seen this phenomenon of adopting Cloud solutions as a challenge and we have found that the transition process is not easy. Being a local subsidiary of a large international group, it has been easier for us to adapt to the very specific services of the market From Romania,” said Adrian Popa of Telekom.

Answering to CloudMania’s question about “How do you appreciate the Cloud adoption opening of the Romanian market for Cloud solutions?”, the panel participants admitted that the process was not easy at all, and the essence of transformation depends on the level of customer’s permissibility for digital technologies. “From our experience, the first adopters of the Cloud solutions were those who quickly understood what the benefits are. High-tech companies, followed by banking, were those with more evolved digital skills,” said Daniel Rusen from Microsoft. “In our case also we noticed a step-by-step adoption process. The first companies that have turned to Cloud have migrated their lighter processes first, following an increasingly complex integration as they have achieved the benefits of operational efficiency and cost savings,” said Adrian Popa from Telekom. Dan Nechita, ex-member of the government and initiator of the GovITHub project, explained how difficult it was to approach digital technologies in public services and mentioned the need for continuity of the programs started, especially from the perspective of raising the general level of digital skills, as well as from the perspective of alignment with European legislation.

The conclusion of the discussions in the Cloud Panel was that although we are still in an early stage, in a few years Romania may become a champion of the Cloud services adoption in Central and Eastern Europe.

A special mention for the highly professional organisation of the event by iCU Events, which brought to Romania a new model of valorising local talents and technologies, in conjunction with regional evolutions and trends, in a field characterised by the most dynamic evolution.

Digitisation is here and is coming with unprecedented challenges for CIOs

More than 200 experts, IT managers and technology leaders gathered this year to the National Conference of IT Managers from Romania to discuss a new vision of the business world in the Digital Age, whose main pillars are Cloud services, new technologies, productivity, mobility, and data analysis.

Organised by CIO Council Romania and Cariere magazine on 30 March, at Radisson Blu Hotel Bucharest, the CIO Council National Conference 2017 was moderated by Yugo Neumorni – President CIO Council Romania and IT Director Hidroelectrica, Carmen Adamescu – Partner, Head of IT Advisory Services at EY Romania and Gianrodolfo Tonielli – Managing Director at Accenture Technology Services in CEE. Great topics contributed to the fifth edition of the conference success, driving the main conference sessions and discussion panels like “Digital Transformation: from technical to business strategies and mindsets Capabilities”, “Cybersecurity. Open SI vs. Secure IT. The Dark Side of the Cloud” or  “Innovation is the sole future of business “.

A digital economy is based first of all on a smart society, focused on people, where business and social revolutions are more than relevant. The everyday impact of technology on people’s lives is not only related to the level of experience. Is related to everyone change. “Digitisation is not a phenomenon of which we speak in the future tense. It is here and comes with unprecedented challenges for CIOs in companies. We are in the digital age, in the era of robots and artificial intelligence, and in the cognitive era,” said Yugo Neumorni, President CIO Council Romania in the Conference opening speech. „Companies, businesses and the whole society turn in a manner difficult to predict in a few years ago. CIOs must be the right hand of executives and should be included on the boards of companies as their role is decisive, both for remodelling business and for prevention and protection against cyber-attacks.”

Every IT professional is interested today in megatrends that dominate business climate. “We must think how to prepare and how to help our customers, looking not only at our industry but also what others do”, said Emin Alper Karacar, Partner at Advisory Services EY Central & Southeast Europe in the first keynote speech from the Conference. Looking to the main IT trends, Marius Antonie – Technology Consulting Manager to Accenture, said “Technology must adapt to our needs, not vice versa. There must be a partnership between us and technology, we must make technology to work for us “. The statement was supported by a robot live demonstration with a machine ready to understand and to execute human commands and to assign a task to other intelligent devices. You can watch the robot demo below.

Looking to the human position in this relationship with intelligent technologies, we have to recognise that disruptive technology put great pressure on people’s position from the current job market. “Surprise, people are the most important. We recognise that technology shapes the world, but the key is still represented by people, what matters most is the man “, highlights Corina Gonteanu Strategic Marketing Director of ManpowerGroup Europe. Cristian Paţachia-Sultanoiu, Development & Innovation Manager at Orange Romania presented the company’s vision on new innovations, with a comprehensive review of the Alba Iulia smart city project, the first big smart city project in Romania, based on public Wi-Fi hotspots with secure Internet access in public areas, public transport smart solution, media and communication platforms and reporting municipality system based on LoRa WAN infrastructure with communicating devices connected to the Internet and public lighting management solutions.

In the security and safety for the digital environment panel Catalina Dodu, Country Manager at Atos IT Solutions and Services Romania pointed out some essential things. “When it comes to cybersecurity, there are two types to organisational: those who have been attacked and those that don’t know they have been attacked. Hacking is no longer the work of a bored teenager; it has become an economy supported by companies and in some cases, state actors,” warned Catalina Dodu.

The third session of the conference entitled “Innovation Is the Sole Future of Business” was opened by Bogdan Tudor, Vice President CIO Council Romania, CEO of Startech Team, who explained the concept of “Digital Transformation Company for Exponential Growth”. “It’s the best time to work in IT because you are connected to huge opportunities opened by the changes brought by technology. We must take advantage of a world in constant change. Every revolution is a great opportunity … for those who are prepared to take advantage of it,” said Bogdan Tudor.

Dragoş Dincă, IT Director at the Romanian Post tried to offer an answer to sensitive questions: “Will Robots destroy jobs?” “Is Romania ready for such a revolution?” Dragos Dincă believes that will create jobs, but that “we must build a trusted environment, both at the country level and organisational level. In addition, it can provide alternative jobs for those who might lose jobs as a result of automation, using retraining programs.”

Finally, Cristian Cucu, CIO at Romanian Government CIO Office said that the overall situation is delicate and we must look to the CIO from a perspective of Business Intelligence. “CIO’s need to be on the board of management to solve problems and to point out some other things really is a gap, but we must take advantage of the huge accelerator technology.”
